Colostrum drink or pure colostrum? How to read the sugar label

Walk into any Malaysian pharmacy and you'll find colostrum sold as a tin of flavoured powder you stir into water or milk. That's a breakfast drink with colostrum in it, which is a different thing from pure colostrum. Neither is automatically right or wrong. You just want to know which one you're buying.

Find two numbers on the panel

Look at the nutrition information panel for the serving size in grams and the total sugars per serving. Divide sugars by serving size. As an illustration, a 16 g scoop listing 8 g of total sugars is half sugar by weight. That number is far more useful than the word "colostrum" on the front of the tin.

Then check the ingredient list order. Ingredients are listed by weight, so if milk powder, sugar or maltodextrin come before colostrum, the tin is mostly something else.

Check how much colostrum is in a serve

Drink mixes usually state milligrams of colostrum per serve. Pure colostrum products are colostrum by definition, so the useful questions become timing and testing. Anovité describes Colostrum6 as pure first-milking colostrum with no added sugar, and publishes minimums for immunoglobulins, proline-rich polypeptides, lactoferrin and growth factors. See the comparison table.

Who should care most

If you're watching sugar intake, a daily sweetened drink adds up across a month. People managing blood sugar should talk to their doctor before adding any supplement, sweetened or not. Colostrum naturally contains some lactose, so "no added sugar" isn't the same as zero sugar. For the bigger picture, start with what makes the six-hour window different.

Common questions

Is a colostrum milk drink the same as a colostrum supplement?

Not usually. A drink mix blends colostrum with milk solids, flavour and often sugar. A pure colostrum supplement is colostrum on its own, in capsules or unflavoured powder.

How do I work out the sugar percentage?

Divide total sugars per serving by the serving size in grams, then multiply by 100. Both numbers are on the nutrition panel.

Does Colostrum6 contain any sugar?

Anovité describes it as having no added sugar. Colostrum naturally contains some lactose, usually less than ordinary milk.
